Pembroke Pines is a beautiful suburban city close to Miami. Unfortunately, the town is infamous due to the high number of people suffering from substance abuse. Numerous individuals have developed addictions, such as alcohol, drug, and fentanyl. In 2016, Pembroke Pines saw an outbreak of fentanyl abuse, where more than 2,000 people died from it within one year (Lakeview Health, 2021b). During the same year, the police arrested above 1,700 people for drunk driving in the region around the city called Broward County (Lakeview Health, 2021b).
One of the organizations that are supporting addicted individuals is Lakeview Health. This is a treatment center in Broward County that has a wide range of addiction treatment programs. It is a human-centered, value-based hub with multiple departments, including Men’s and Women’s Detox Centers, Drug and Alcohol Detox Centers, Heroin and Opioid Centers, and Anxiety and Bipolar Treatment Centers. The center’s main objective is to provide timely and compassionate support to the sick. They regard addiction as a disease that has to be treated rather than an individual’s mistake or life punishment (2021a).
A community health nurse can perform various tasks while collaborating with the agency. The nurse can deliver additional mental and physical support to the patients. For example, they can do immunizations, provide and control the uptake of the appropriate medication, and conduct home visits. Besides, the nurses can arrange community and family meetings, where the public learns more about drug abuse and its consequences (Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association [APNA], 2021). The organization, in turn, is able to provide extra research materials, resources and facilities to the nurses to improve the effectiveness of their work.
