Traffic speed limits set the legal minimum and maximum speed range on roads. They are usually placed by governmental authorities. While some people might be against them, I argue that speed limits are of high importance.
Firstly, speed limits improve traffic safety and reduce the number of casualties. According to National Center for Statistics and Analysis (2019), 26% of all traffic fatalities in 2017 were speeding-related (p. 1). This means that, without speed limits, the number of fatal accidents would be even higher.
Secondly, speed limits allow reducing the negative impact of cars. Sticking to a recommended speed limit in urban areas decreases noise pollution. Moreover, speed limits are crucial for constructions as they are engineered for a particular level of vibration.
Without regulating speed, using vehicles would be much more dangerous. It concerns not only drivers and passengers but also the environment. Speed limits allow to prevent accidents and allow the traffic system to function more efficiently.
