The Issue of Immigration in the United States

The given analytical essay will primarily focus on the issue of immigration in the United States. Amy Chua’s writing of the reading, where she raises valid points regarding immigration in the United States. The author’s voice is mostly neutral and informative, but it logically directs the reasoning process towards her position. She understands the overall intricacies involved in the problem, and thus, Chua is not reluctant to address one of the most controversial issues of modern-day America. Her voice frames and drives the arguments towards the fact that immigrations need to return to their original roots, where the most talented and highly professional individuals were most welcomed. She understands the mistakes of both extremes, where conservatives do not tolerate immigrants, and progressives are overwhelmed with political correctness and false connotations of racism. It is important to note that one should support his or her evidence when raising a point.

The author actively utilizes general examples in the form of companies, such as Google, Intel, and historical facts, as well as personal background (Seyler & Brizee, 2018). It is effective at convincing the main audience because these are readily available pieces of knowledge. However, it seems that the writing lacks an academic source to support the arguments because they are more reliable and solid in terms of validity. The logical pattern is also present in the article, and it focuses on shining light on the issues from both conventional perspectives and illuminating the subjects. The main logical fallacy found in the text is ad populum, where the author appeals to what most people think. It is highly evident in the use of the term of national heritage, which is a broad term. Chua does not fully clarify what she means by this idea, because allowing professionals to enter and work in the country is not sufficient to identify the concept. In addition, the reading matches standard writing structure of an essay with introduction and arguments, but there is no conclusion or summary. The main issue lies in the fact that there is no single point being raised due to Chua jumping from one aspect of immigration to another. Therefore, it can be improved by focusing on a single element of the problem and adding a conclusion.
