The Negotiation Process: Communication Barriers

Introduction

Although genetically embedded through communication processes, the negotiation process can be complex and multifaceted. Communication barriers interfere with effective contact between the negotiating parties. These obstacles hinder the exchange of ideas between people and their understanding. It is impossible to avoid communication barriers, as they arise due to typical life situations. However, it is essential to find ways around such situations in order to establish communication successfully.

Discussion

Speaking of communication barriers, it is worth noting the linguistic one since misunderstanding the language can lead to misinterpretation of the message. Sometimes communication may cause many problems due to the language barrier (Alshammari, Duff & Guilhermino, 2019). It is necessary to ask for an interpreter’s assistance to avoid misunderstandings. Socio-cultural barriers are similar to linguistic ones, as they also arise from the diversity of the parties’ origins (Naz, Hussain & Adnan, 2020). For example, in negotiations between representatives of two different countries, a problem may arise due to cultural norms and principles. The last communication barrier under discussion is psychological. It is an obstacle between the parties of the negotiations based on their psyche, emotional state, or perplexity. For example, I have encountered people prone to make decisions based on their emotional reactions. Such situations lead not only to misunderstandings but even to conflict situations.

Conclusion

Summing up, the barriers discussed hinder the exchange of ideas between the negotiating parties, which prevents the achievement of the result. Understanding the nature and origin of this phenomenon is essential to find ways to circumvent it. The proper strategy and professional approach are crucial in wise and respectful communication.
