Annex is a comprehensive document that reflects the ICAO’s flexibility in keeping pace with international civil aviation. The critical responsibility of Annex-17 is to protect civil aviation from unlawful interference. It is made up of five chapters that dictate international regulations and recommendations regarding aviation security to safeguard airports and their personnel (Maliwat, 2018). Its application is based on the implementation of security rules and regulations.
An airport is a place where maximum security is required. Various areas have to be considered while designing the security features of an airport. The most vital security consideration is where security-related functions will be conducted. The air operation area is one of these areas. This is the section of the airport where the security measures dictated by the Code of Federal Regulations (Title 49) are conducted. The security identification area is another place designers and engineers should consider while formulating the airport security structure.
Public ticketing and accommodation area is another place that is given so much consideration. Travelers buy their tickets, and their baggage is checked or loads examined here. Full security cover should be provided in this area. This is because very many people are using this place at a given time. The high population at this place is a predisposing factor towards the risk of passage of threatening factors, including thugs. Alaska’s international airport meets the standards and recommendations of practices of the ICAO Annex 17 by maintaining a maximum level of security on its aviation ground. This is by applying recent technologies to ensure that civil aviation is protected against unlawful disruption. It also uses trained and trusted security personnel to maintain the most friendly and secure aviation environment.
