Bias in the American News on Political Stories

Recently CNN and Washington Post have released news regarding the Russian army retreat in Ukraine’s village., which was ignored by FOX news and is mainly associated with a conservative news portal. On contrast CNN and Washington Post are known for its support for liberalism or, in other words, the left side. This news was released on the CNN website with the headline “‘Everybody was running away.’ Ukrainians in Kharkiv villages describe Russia’s retreat” (Vandoorne et al., 2022). As for the Washington Post, they wrote “Amid Ukraine’s startling gains, liberated villages describe Russian troops dropping rifles and fleeing” (Hendrix et al., 2022). The headlines represent the same idea and reports on the same story.

In short, this news is about the advance of Ukrainian forces and the retaking of territory from the hands of Russian soldiers. According to some experts, perhaps a turning point is coming in this story with the war and the occupiers. This news could be easily found on the main page of the news portal in the first columns, whereas the FOX news main page is mainly dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II Death and the news about republicans. In total, no information could be found on the FOX news website regarding the war in Ukraine, whereas CNN has even put advertisements and visual graphics to support Ukraine citizens.

Talking about the case when the news was observed by conservative news but ignored by liberals, we could talk about the case of a blackout in California. In February, California narrowly avoided a blackout as leaders urged residents to use electricity conservatively in their homes and cars. The issue was covered by the conservative news portal known as FOX News. However, other media networks have solely blamed extreme heat and climate change. MSNBC and CNN avoided the California situation almost entirely, and the morning and afternoon news programs sporadically gave local reporters the news. This fact was noted in the article “MSNBC, CNN give straight news on California grid issues after panning Texas over winter blackout” written by FOX news journalists (Lanum, 2022). According to the article, the CNN correspondent only briefly mentioned California’s power surge.
