Discussion: Sam Berns’ Philosophy for a Happy Life

Sam Berns’ talk on how he achieves happy life while living with a rare medical condition provides valuable insight for all people who ever face obstacles and prostration. His philosophy is founded on three primary principles: focusing on possibilities instead of inabilities, choosing positive communication circles, and bringing certainty to the future. My impression of the talk was positive because it discussed relatable themes such as fighting with bad moods and making significant efforts to achieve goals and fulfill dreams.

Berns perceives communication as one of the essential components of a happy life. In describing his relationships with friends in school, Berns said that they could see each other for who they are “on the inside” (2013). The statement means that strong and reliable relationships allow people to connect on the same level despite their differences. Moreover, Berns admitted that as part of the school band, he could communicate with other people through music, which excites him the most because the music does not reflect his condition. Thus, the talk emphasized the importance of skills in communication as they provide a basis for mutual understanding communication.

Berns’ positive perspective on life improves his communication competence because he acknowledges the communications’ importance for his life. The help and support of surrounding people allow him to be more confident and outspoken as a speaker despite his young age. Moreover, the belief in the positive intentions of people he communicates with allows Berns to be more open and sociable. Lastly, Berns explained that he prefers to focus on things he can do instead of activities that are incompatible with Progeria. Communication presents one of the things that Sam can do with the confidence of a person without any conditions. Therefore, it supports his communication competence and ability to connect with people of different ages and social statuses.
