Origin
The items in the debris accumulation originate from diverse sources, mainly terrestrial activities. An approximation suggests that annually, 1.15 to 2.41 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean via rivers, contributing to the formation of the Great Pacific garbage patch (Zaman & Newman, 2021). These plastic remnants are carried by both rivers and ocean currents, eventually gathering in the gyres, where they become ensnared and form the garbage patches.
Effects
