Nuclear Power vs Coal Power: Environmental Impact, Safety, and Health Effects

I would choose the nuclear plant as my electricity source, since it is safer for the environment than a coal-burning power plant. Burning coal emits the most greenhouse gases of any energy source, which could contribute to global warming. In turn, a nuclear fusion power station capable of recycling its trash and directly using waste heat for heating facilities would be a significantly better source of electricity than a coal-burning facility that releases pollutants into the atmosphere. Therefore, those who live near this plant are also susceptible to these diseases, making the coal-burning power plant an unacceptable solution.

The coal supply is non-renewable and will run out in around a century. Asthma, cancer, heart and lung conditions, neurological issues, acid rain, global warming, and other severe environmental and public health effects are all associated with air pollution from coal-fired power plants. Pneumoconiosis, commonly known as black lung disease, and emphysema can affect coal miners if they breathe in excessive amounts of coal dust (Wolfson 192-193).

The nuclear power plants, in their turn, use hydrogen isotopes, such as deuterium and tritium, which do not need to be stored in an enclosed space and are not employed in military weapons or strategic planning. These fuels do not cause waste management issues or contaminate the air like coal does because they contain older carbon (Wolfson 166). Most of the goods produced by nuclear reactions can be recycled, while the remainder would quickly decompose.

The safety precautions of the nuclear power plant make it safer for people living nearby than the coal-burning power plant, which is too high. It is crucial to remember that nuclear power facilities are built with numerous safety mechanisms layered on top of one another to avoid and lessen catastrophic events. The specific degree of risk is determined by several factors, including the plant’s layout and safety precautions, local population density, and emergency preparedness procedures. Regulatory bodies and nuclear power plant operators collaborate to safeguard the local population. Therefore, the risks of nuclear power are mitigated by safety regulations.
