The Identity of Jesus: Exploring the Debate Between Divine and Human Aspects

Religion is a unique phenomenon that unites a certain group of people by presenting them with common values, beliefs, and worldviews. In most cases, it arises from the idea that some almighty creature could impact people’s lives and their destinies, as well as contribute to their spiritual growth. However, the character of this creature remains ever mysterious. For this reason, the question of God, its nature, and its origin become central to any religion. Regarding Christianity and its idea of the holy trinity, we could also say that this question is topical. Jesus as the Son of God sacrificed himself to save humanity and show them the right way. This event in itself serves as the basis for the religion; however, at the same time, it also poses numerous questions related to Jesus’ nature. The complexity of the issue, its ethical character, and the existence of numerous perspectives has given rise to vigorous discussion.

One of the first views states that Jesus is fully God. The adherents of this belief are sure that Jesus, being the son of God, also inherited his divinity. Moreover, his actions and life are used as evidence to support this statement. Jesus was able to turn water into wine, heal sick people, walk on water, etc. All these actions are impossible for a common human being, even if he walks after the spirit and knows how to understand the nature of god. Additionally, this view is supported by the Bible, which teaches that Jesus is God by showing many attributes peculiar to a divine creature. He knows everything, is everywhere, rules over everything, and has a unique power. This is one of the first perspectives on Jesus’ identity that still remains popular with people who believe that Jesus is fully God and should be treated as such.

However, there is also another popular point of view which states that Jesus is fully man. The adherents of this particular idea point to his life and its most important characteristics as the main evidence for this statement. First of all, if Jesus is God, his divinity could not be doubted. However, when he was born in Nazareth, he also became a man. Mortal woman was his mother, and he passed through every stage common to a human being. However, it is vital to consider the fact that Jesus was a sinless man. He acted in a way that made his resurrection and ascension possible. From this perspective, Jesus became a man when he was born into our world. He also displayed numerous features peculiar to human beings, and he was mortal, which could also be used as another argument to prove this theory.

Finally, there is also the idea that Jesus is fully God and full man. People who believe this particular theory are sure that in being born, Jesus had not stopped being God. At the same time, he obviously became a man. This means that Jesus remained a divine creature as well as a human being. For this reason, he was able to perform the above-mentioned actions like walking on water, or turning water into wine, as well as laying down his life and dying. Mortality is one of the strongest arguments for people who believe that Jesus’ identity is closely related to ours. To be God means to be immortal; in Jesus sacrificing himself and becoming God, abandoning his terrestrial body and reclaiming his divine power in this regard, he could be considered a unique creature who possesses divinity as well as other qualities peculiar to any person living on this planet. He is able to heal people, but he is also able to die.

Considering these varied approaches, it is possible to state that the question of Jesus’ nature remains complex. All the above-mentioned perspectives provide strong arguments to support their basic assumptions in determining Jesus’ identity. Though there seems to be no one right variant, I am sure that the choice of which perspective to adopt depends on personal beliefs. However, at the moment, the point of view that states that Jesus is fully God and fully man could be considered the most appropriate. Everyone knows that he is a son of God, which means that he never lost his divinity. Moreover, many of his actions could be described as miracles that could be performed only by God. At the same time, he was born of a mortal woman, and he experienced the same hardships any human being might. Finally, he became a victim who was sacrificed to save humanity and show people that there is a way to God and that they should believe. For this reason, I think that the view of Jesus that presupposes that he is fully God and fully man is reasonable.

In conclusion, we could answer the question that the Gospel of Matthew poses to us and say that Jesus is a divine creature who came to us as a human being and showed the way to save our souls and find the way to God.
