In today’s world of innovation, a consumer is faced with the overwhelming task of identifying the best product to meet his needs. This dilemma is magnified in the cell phone manufacturing industry where innovations are the norm, cell phone companies are competing against each other for control of the lion’s share in the industry by coming up with cutting-edge phones that are based on different technologies. In my article, I intend to address the consumer’s dilemma by looking at the upside and downside of different cell phone operating systems. Is the blackberry better than the windows mobile? Does the iPhone operating system beat the Symbian or the Android? As a tech-fanatic, I will put various smartphone operating systems through their paces.
A recent feature in the CNN (Voigt 2010) highlighted what may be the beginning of the end of Nokia which has been controlling over forty percent of the mobile phone industry, this is because the Symbian operating system which was acquired by Nokia in 2008 is losing its popularity to another newbie such as the android and the iPhone and Samsung have joined the fray with its cell phone operating system, Bada. Other older smartphone systems that are slowly losing their popularity include windows mobile by Microsoft and Blackberry.
So which is the best software? Which is the smartest of smartphones? It appears that the industry is strewn with competing systems all setting their sights on acquiring the title of the company with the most sophisticated smartphone in the world. I do not intend on answering this question in this article because the consumer should not be blinded by all the hype surrounding this industry, a consumer’s choice of an operating system should be a reflection of his lifestyle, he should choose an operating system that is tailored to meet all or most of his needs, he should remember that he is king and he is the one who decides which applications and functions to be developed.
I will structure the article by first giving a brief description of each software then addressing its upside and downside. I will Finnish the article in suspense that will allow the reader to decide for himself the best alternative. I will address Blackberry’s email advantage as well as its innovative keyboard and its orderly and easy-to-use interface, however, Blackberry has limitations in document viewing as well as its non-sexy design. Google’s operating system; Android has the advantage of flexibility and price although not as sophisticated as other systems. Although Symbian controls a huge market share it is not as easy to use as other systems. The windows mobile is also growing strong, it may not be a super smartphone and has a poor touch application but it can easily run on several different manufacturers’ handsets and has been improving tremendously with the different versions that Microsoft has been creating recently.
I am convinced that this article has what it takes to enlighten the consumer who needs information that will enable him to make the right decision when it comes to choosing a smartphone. This article is also important for business corporations who want to get information on the current trends and gain consumer insight.
