The “Get Up America!” War Song Analysis

In my work, I would like to bring your attention to the old song “Wake Up America!” performed at the beginning of the First World War. This song reveals well the strong spirit of the past and the overall attitude of people towards upcoming events. Although any war song has a reasonable amount of agitation to raise a soldier’s spirit, “Wake up America!” captivates with its lightness and melodious pace, which is unusual for general battle songs.

The song uses a vivid image of Uncle Sam, who talks with his soldiers and challenges patriotic questions about families, the country’s heritage, and the glory of past events. All questions are appropriate and rather rhetorical but leave behind a precise touch of agitation. The song beckons us to neglect selfishness and summons us to pass the “test of loyalty” by joining the defense of the Motherland. The lyrics introduce former presidents such as George Washington, Lincoln, and Mc Kinley and call to cherish what they have done for the country. The song actively appeals precisely to historical and patriotic beliefs and not personal reasons. The soldier is urged to think first about the prosperity of the country and its overall honor.

The song’s tempo prevails smooth and melodic despite the clear emphasis on patriotism and agitational in the lyrics. Words are mainly perceived as a peaceful conversation with an old acquaintance regarding the greatness of past events. It is a great way to softly encourage people without resorting to a harsh or even aggressive campaign. In this example, a quiet, peaceful pace gives comfort and confidence in actions. While listening, there is a warm feeling of love for the Motherland and a heartful desire to defend it.
