Arab Students’ English Language Skills and Attitudes

Evaluation of Student A

Attitude and Motivation

The student is not particularly interested in the language but appears to regard it as a useful thing to learn. Apart from that, the student finds it difficult to discover the motivation to cope with and overcome the difficulties of the learning process. At the same time, when the student notices that his performance is improving, his motivation is temporarily boosted. The student is moderately attentive and does not tend to get distracted during lessons, but his attention can be insufficient at times.

Grammar Skills

The student pays particular attention to grammar skills and works to use the gleaned knowledge both in writing and speaking without particular encouragement. There is still room for improvement, but grammar lessons appear to be of interest for the student. He easily remembers the theory and practices sufficiently. The improvement in the grammar skills is predictably prominent.

Vocabulary Skills

The student learns new vocabulary rather passively: he recognizes the new words, but he is not very focused on using them. As a result, his vocabulary learning is not particularly efficient. The student needs to work harder for better results, but some progress is noteworthy. He studies the essentials, even though he is not very willing to go beyond them.

Reading and Writing Skills

The student seems to find reading and writing the least interesting part of lessons; as a result, the progress in the areas is very slow. The student appears to find writing particularly difficult, mostly as a result of rather low motivation and insufficient practice. The student does not actively work to improve, but he completes the required activities. As a result, there is a certain tendency of improvement in his skills.

Speaking and Listening Skills

The student’s skills have been gradually progressing in the terms of both listening and speaking. The student is not particularly active during speaking activities, but it is not difficult to encourage him to participate. Similarly, it is possible to remind him of incorporating new vocabulary and grammar, but he is not focused on doing so. The student is very attentive during listening activities and exhibits very good results in this area.

Evaluation of Student B

Attitude and Motivation

The student is distracted very easily and finds it difficult to concentrate on the lessons that do not appear interesting to him, which is especially harmful to grammar learning activities. The student is not particularly initiative and needs special encouragement to participate in class activities. Apart from that, difficulties that are encountered in the process of learning seem to discourage him. In general, the student’s motivation is not sufficient to overcome the difficulties of learning the English language.

Grammar Skills

The student learns grammar rules and seems to understand their applicability, but does not exercise enough. He is not willing to incorporate new knowledge in the course of speaking activities as he sticks to the simplest constructions. In the terms of writing, more effort is made, but it is obvious that the student does not concentrate on grammar enough. The improvement in his grammar skills is predictably modest.

Vocabulary Skills

The student has a very good memory but does not devote much effort to the new vocabulary usage. He appears to learn the words and phrases but finds it difficult to use them appropriately. Apart from that, he soon forgets the new vocabulary that is not used extensively in class. Vocabulary skills of the student require significant improvement as he begins to underperform in the terms of the group.

Reading and Writing Skills

The student finds reading difficult due to the problems with his vocabulary. Still, he exhibits slight improvement due to the class activities. The writing skills are improving slowly, and the student does not seem to be interested in diversifying the vocabulary and grammar that he uses. His writing activities are rather inefficient as a result.

Speaking and Listening Skills

Pronunciation of the student is a noticeable problem, and he does not exhibit any effort in improving it. In fact, these difficulties appear to make the student refrain from participating in speaking activities. The student is very passive and prefers to listen to other students. Listening skills are developing, and an improvement in them can be noted.

Evaluation of Student C

Attitude and Motivation

The student demonstrates excellent motivation, which appears to be mostly caused by the wish to outperform the peers. Apart from that, it seems that the student is interested in the language as such. The student is especially interested in speaking; grammar lessons are considered less exciting but are paid proper attention due to their importance. In general, the motivation of this student does not require improvement.

Grammar Skills

The student demonstrates significant improvement in the terms of grammar usage for all the relevant skills. Some of them (particularly, speaking activities) might signal the need for attention improvement. Still, the student actively works to incorporate the new knowledge in the course of practical activities. It is also important that the student realizes the need for both theory and practice in the terms of grammar and pays sufficient attention to both.

Vocabulary Skills

The student actively works to improve his vocabulary. He attempts to learn all the new words that are encountered, but some of them are not very frequently used. The efficiency of such a method can be questioned, but the vocabulary of the student is very rich for his level. Apart from that, he has been improving continuously during classes.

Reading and Writing Skills

The student works very determinedly when writing or reading. The writing results occasionally signal a lack of attention, but it is also obvious that the student works to put to use as much new knowledge as possible. During reading, the student pays attention to all the new words, which makes the process rather slow, but the situation is improving. The progress is noticeable for this skills set.

Speaking and Listening Skills

The student is very active during speaking activities. In fact, he is almost aggressive which does not always have a very positive effect on conversations. Still, it is easy to remind him of the nature of group activities. The pronunciation is improving very slowly since the student is mostly interested in the message of his speeches. In the terms of listening, the student is improving slower and appears to lack attention during these activities.

Evaluation of Student D

Attitude and Motivation

The student’s motivation is good; he is particularly interested in understanding the differences between his mother tongue and the English language. This willingness to understand the nature of the language affects the student’s performance in a very positive way. It is also easy for him to concentrate. Apart from that, the difficulties of the learning process do not appear to discourage him, provoking the desire to improve.

Grammar Skills

It is obvious that the student directs significant efforts at understanding grammar rules, not just drilling them (in case such a strategy is applicable). The student comments that such a strategy seems more effort-efficient to him. In the terms of practice, the student is willing to perform exercises and demonstrates an expected improvement, especially in writing. While the student attempts to use new knowledge during speaking activities, it is noticeable that he needs to work on self-error correction.

Vocabulary Skills

The student is interested in the English language phraseology. Other vocabulary units also receive due attention, even though it is obvious that the student gains most pleasure from learning idiomatic expressions. Apart from that, noticeable efforts are directed at incorporating vocabulary units in language practice and using them correctly. The student is very efficient in learning new vocabulary.

Reading and Writing Skills

The student exhibits due diligence when working with writing or reading. The difficulties that have been encountered are typical for Arab learners, and the student is aware of them and actively works to eliminate them. The improvement is not exceeding expectations, but it is noticeable. The student also exhibits an understanding of the correlation between reading and vocabulary improvement.

Speaking and Listening Skills

The student focuses on the problems of pronunciation and works to eliminate them. Apart from that, it is obvious that the student considers speaking and listening activities to be interesting and very important. He realizes the correlation between listening and speaking and pays due attention to both skills. The student is quite active during speaking activities and exhibits a significant improvement in the terms of the two skills.

Evaluation of Student E

Attitude and Motivation

The student’s motivation is very good; a particularly noticeable trait is his persistence in working with the problems that arise in the process of learning. The student is willing to compete with his peers. Apart from that, he seems to consider the knowledge of a foreign language to be a useful skill. The attitude is, therefore, positive, and it is very difficult to discourage the student.

Grammar Skills

The student demonstrates an improvement in grammar usage, particularly in written English. Speaking activities show that the student is very good at self-error correction. Apart from that, it is noticeable that the student is capable of determining the areas that are difficult to him personally (for some time it was the Present Perfect tense, for example). It is also obvious that he works to improve these areas outside the class.

Vocabulary Skills

The student works systematically to enrich his vocabulary. His strategy includes both memorizing and utilizing the new units, and he pays particular attention to the environment, in which they are used. The student’s approach is very efficient, and it is obvious that new vocabulary receives appropriate attention. As a result, the student’s vocabulary is improving perceptibly.

Reading and Writing Skills

The student’s writing skills are improving together with grammar and vocabulary, even though more practice could be suggested in this respect. It is obvious that the student intends to use new knowledge; his attempts are usually successful. It is also worth mentioning that he is very good at self-correction in the terms of writing. In the terms of reading, the student reads in English outside the class-related activities, which affects his level of language command in a most positive way.

Speaking and Listening Skills

The student encounters the difficulties that are typical for Arabic-speaking students who are studying the English language. He is not discouraged and participates actively in speaking activities, which is reflected in the improvement of his speaking skills. The attempts at enriching his speech with new vocabulary units and grammar structures are noteworthy. The student is not enthusiastic about listening, but performs relatively well, showing slight improvement.
