Coffee Shop: The Exterior, Interior Design, and Customer Service

In my opinion, coffee is significantly more than just a drink. I consider coffee a cultural attribute, a part of lifestyle, and a source of inspiration. The atmosphere of a coffee shop makes people more creative through a combination of an informal environment and visual variety.1 The magic of coffee has turned it into my passion — I wish to own a chain of unique coffee shops in the future. In this post, I share my ideas on how to make this dream a reality.

Most importantly, I believe that a good coffee shop starts from the exterior. An appealing storefront is crucial for grasping the customers’ attention.2 An attractive design creates conditions for transforming a cup of coffee into an incredible experience.3 Exterior largely determines whether the customer visits your coffee shop or passes by with indifference. Authentic materials or an attractive mural on the wall help with catching attention.

A simple yet informative menu style serves as another valuable piece of the coffee shop exterior. For example, a collage-style menu gives the customer an idea of what to expect with their order.4 The actual images of products in high definition add to the feeling of anticipation. A good menu design can put a coffee shop ahead of its competitors, so the assistance of a professional photographer is advised.

Once the customers get inside the coffee shop, the interior joins the fight for their hearts and minds. A cohesive brand strategy requires the presence of a definite interior theme.5 In the modern era, the industrial style inspired by factories, warehouses, and other industrial spaces is considered one of the hot trends.6 The industrial vibe is beneficial in making the most out of unconventional spaces.7 A warm, natural-looking environment built via a calm color palette and mechanical décor elements embodies the spirit of modernity and creativity.

However, the choice of the coffee shop theme should not necessarily be limited to popular concepts. One can use a broad spectrum of ideas to stand out from the competition. For example, the art gallery or play area concepts are a perfectly viable alternative to the industrial theme.8 The only mandatory elements in coffee shop interior design are consistency and quality of execution.

Finally, a decent coffee shop must offer an appropriate level of customer service. The customers must be serviced by well-trained, polite, and friendly staff. In addition, it is always a good idea to supplement coffee with occasional special events at the shop. The former part can be achieved through employee training and sound hiring practices.9 The latter can offer the customers such activities as board games, creative workshops, and open mic performances.10 Overall, the exterior, interior design, and customer service create a coffee shop worthy of this magnificent drink.
