Elderly Health and Substance Abuse Relationship

Studying the history and research conducted on the problems in 1948-1958 can provide important insight for solving problems in the modern world. Hence, the topics chosen for this scientific paper are elderly health and social care and alcohol and substance abuse. During the search for articles on this topic, two research papers were found called “The care and treatment of the elderly sick” and “Substance screening in a sample of “clubbers””.

These studies focused on selected topics and offered solutions to the analyzed problems. Henceforth, the first article, “The care and treatment of the elderly sick,” underlines that the increasing number of elderly people will have to be provided for by a decreasing number of young people in the 60s (Kemball, 1950). The solution to this problem is an increase in the birth rate, contributing to the maintenance and improvement of social services for the elderly. Moreover, such measures can also ensure an increase in the quality of the welfare of the state as a whole. Another problem of that time, which existed at that time, was the unevenness of the elderly and working populations. This was also becoming a dominant human service concern, which required a decision and action.

The second article, “Substance screening in a sample of “clubbers””, focuses on the problem of substance abuse at youth parties. As an example, the popular entertainment place Ibiza is used, where the younger generation resorts to excessive alcohol and drug use, which was a problem at that time (Piro et al., 1954). One of the proposed solutions to this problem was a recommendation to improve legislation in this area and regulate people’s behavior at such events.

Furthermore, this work dealt with such problems as health and social services for the elderly and the problem of excessive use of alcohol and narcotic substances. For this purpose, scientific articles were studied, and the 1948-1958 years were chosen as the time interval. Thus, it can be concluded that the analysis of past scientific literature has shown the value of these works for modern times and the introduction of recommendations in the solution of the current issues.
