Healthcare: The Focus on Patient Safety

The focus on patient safety in the hospital is to minimize harm. The hospital administrator should focus on the following guidelines. To begin with, it is vital to identify seasonal peaks in the falls of the injury. For instance, the rate of falls rises in the winter periods as a result of admitting older people with recurrent triggered sickness. It is also good to monitor the total number of reported falls to understand the fallout in the hospital institution.

As the hospital administrator, the adopted measures to reduce patients’ fallout should be balanced with patients’ rehabilitations, freedom, secrecy, self-possession, and personal choices. In this case, the patients auditing should be carried out by asking the patients questions that correspond to their dignity and independence. Apart from that, it is helpful to use frequently collected hospital information such as the admission period and discharge destination.

As the administrator, appointing executive lead and establishing a falls group ensures that there is a reduction in the patient’s fall out as they improve the trust’s agenda. To add to this, it is also the responsibility of the administrator to develop and implement a plan for fall prevention training. The vulnerable groups for falls are people with dementia. Thus, the training should be on how to provide care for patients with short-term memory challenges.

The environment also affects the patients’ safety. Therefore, it is important to assess the vulnerability of patients using it. Some of the environmental factors that are risks to the patient include, lighting, call bells, design doors, and furniture stability when individuals lean on them (Axton and Leaman, 109).

Health care providers are also prone to legal challenges in their efforts to provide the designated services to the clients due to various reasons. To begin with, the failure or delay of the caregiver to diagnose certain medical conditions thus resulting in severe injury or even death is rampant. The practice entails monitoring the patient for a certain period closely. In addition, there are instances whereby the physicians may be negligent as a result of either tiredness or mental distraction. This may lead to harm on the part of the patient. The affected client can thus take legal suit against the doctor (Pozgar, 46).

Some of the medical practitioners also fail to consult promptly as they deliver the duties to clients. The assumption is that he or she can treat all types of diseases. However, within the medical fraternity, there are different specializations. In this case, there is the aspect of referral of patients to specialists. The negligence in the maternity care practice has also landed many practitioners to face the law (Pozgar, 48).

To avoid such incidents, the caregivers should attend to patients and not rely on the information from the third parties about the patient’s conditions. Training of the caregivers on personal examination is advocated at all times. Regular consultation of the patients and the caregiver is also crucial to minimizing the legal cases. The common breakdown in the patient’s condition occurs when the level of consultations is low. This may lead to the deterioration of the health condition of the patient. Caregivers should also keep good documentation of the patients as they lack the time to recount each conversation (Camòs, 12).
