Predicting Future Healthcare Management Information Systems Trends

Introduction

Improvement in technology has worked to ease data processing and health care services in most health care centers. Such improvements include the introduction of CIO surveys, information processing methodology (IPM), and information and communication technology (ICT), among others. These have improved care giving in healthcare centers. This paper will explore the importance of CIO surveys to HMIS industry, hardware investments, similarities and differences, and reasons for prioritization (Haux, 2002).

Importance of CIO survey to HMIS industry

The main goal of expanding information processing methodology (IPM) and information and communication technology (ICT) should be to improve further, the quality of care, while maintaining reasonable costs. In fact, with support from modern IPM and ICT, the boundaries between inpatient and outpatient care will reduce, in the process, enabling a more efficient, and patient-centered health care. Moreover, this will lead to increased cooperation between health-care professionals. Other advantages include increased ways of communication between health-care professionals and patients through modern ICT and the Internet, among others (Haux, 2002).

Hardware investments for HMIS future

Our society is increasingly influenced by modern information and communication technology (ICT). Health care has profited greatly by this development. The main concerns in health care are focused on its methods of delivery in the near future. For instance, concerns are raised on what will happen within the next 10 years, or to be more precise, in the year 2013. In this regard, measures must be undertaken by political bodies, self-governing health institutions, and by medical informatics research, among other stakeholders, to ensure an efficient, medically advanced and yet affordable future health care system. Three factors are likely to influence further development of information processing in health care in the near future. These include increase in the population, medical advances, and advances in informatics.

These factors have motivated us to set up 30 centers for health care provision in the year 2013. These centers will cover areas of health care, such as people, information systems, and ICT tools, among others. In addition, three major objectives have been identified namely patient-centered recording and use of medical data for cooperative care, process-integrated decision support through current medical knowledge, and comprehensive use of patient data for research and health care reporting. Consequently, political institutions should provide a framework for networked, patient-centered health care. They are also called on to regulate the storage and exchange of health care data and of appropriate information system architectures. Finally, health care institutions must emphasize professionalism in information management. There are several research topics in medical informatics, the most relevant ones include comprehensive electronic patient records, modern health information system architectures, architectures for medical knowledge centers, specific data processing methods (medical data mining), and multi-functional mobile ICT tools (Haux, 2002).

Compare and Contrast on actual survey results

After reading the mini case, I came up with the following results: Within the next fiscal year, 37 percent of budget will grow to be 5-10 percent. Furthermore, the survey tells us that 45 percent of budget will grow into the following year. It is also quite important to note that, this kind of reasoning is highly significant to clinical information system. According to the survey, 16 percent does not apply and will not expect budget growth. The text also talks about overall expectation of the organization and growth, which will be spurred by more information, and could include clinicians. If we compare this to the survey, statistics show that 33 percent of the budget will be funded for Electronic Health methods. Moreover, It appears that software to be used would cost about 20 percent of the budget while another 20 percent will be used for backup / disaster recovery. In addition, 12 percent will be used for laptop/Tablets/PdAs. In total, 38 percent of the survey will be valuable to the organization, although 57 percent will be more meaningful once the program has matured (Tan, 2009).

Reasons why results show investment in EHR to be a top priority for CIO’s in the coming year

This is mainly because the given result shows that of an old EHR system. In fact, if there was one in place, then might have not been effective. However, If a new system can show the CIO and stockholders then there is a substantial need for the new system. Moreover, this would be an extra bonus for the CIO, and as has been seen in the survey the numbers are actually high for this survey.

Conclusion

Research has shown that EHRs will be useful to hospitals as defense against malpractice cases. For instance, no longer will sloppy physician handwriting be admitted as evidence that cannot be read by the jury or by the provider who wrote it. Instead, they will prevent lawsuits by decreasing medication errors (not proven in studies yet). Patient portals with educational materials can increase the ‘informed’ in informed consent. Test results may also be easier to locate and be reviewed by healthcare providers (Scher, 2011). According to regulation has the propensity to increase complexity of applications as well as shift works from one group to another. Moreover, most of these regulations increase burden on caring process since they change data. For instance, clinicians are overburdened when given other responsibilities such as billing and quality support (Guerra, 2011).
