Technology Innovation and the Cultural Loss of Customary Practices

Older people in modern societies acknowledge that participatory entertainment has been part of traditional culture for generations. Individuals identify their cultural practices during social gatherings seen in conservative communities. However, customary practices have become obsolete due to the large-scale adoption of digital technologies. In my residential area, and evidence from close family friends indicate a decline in communal singing and collaborative prayers as customary practices intended for cultural cohesion. I believe that digital technologies have contributed to the loss of traditional values, leading to Western practices’ cultural assimilation.

In modern social setups, many people have access to state-of-the-art technology innovation in digital devices and applications. The invention of social media platforms, for instance, has enhanced communication through instant messaging (IM) that allows sending and receiving information worldwide. My relatives have benefited from this technology by frequently communicating with family members irrespective of global time differences. My friends, colleagues, and classmates have also benefited from the online sharing of memorable experiences through images and videos despite geographic barriers. My perspective regarding technology entails unregulated innovation in the digital invention as it has contributed to the loss of customary values and traditional practices in modern communities.

Technology has influenced the dynamic change in cultural practices evidenced in both developed and developing societies from a personal angle. Ease of access to handheld devices by individuals of a vital category of demographics, especially teenagers and young adults, has been instrumental to this change. Culturally insensitive individuals, expected to lead in enforcing and preserving traditional values and cultural practices, have failed in assuming a cohesive social obligation relevant to the change. As a result, technology has made many customary values and activities obsolete, replacing them with Western culture.
