The History of Technology in Teaching History

There is an open discussion on whether the history of technology is addressed appropriately in teaching history nowadays. Technology is a part of the development of human civilization, and it has severely impacted the course of history. Thus, this paper aims to examine the role of technology throughout history to analyze whether the subject is addressed adequately in teaching history. Technology is an essential part of the world’s history, and it is correctly addressed in teaching history as its role in civilization development is not underestimated.

It is vital to understand what technology is and its role in teaching history and the education process at large. According to Agar (2020), technology can be identified as “knowledge of how to make things that would otherwise not exist” (p. 377). Thus, history itself would not exist without technology in many respects, as people would not know how to record and teach history. Moreover, technology is often applied in students’ learning (Hashim, 2018). Everything mentioned above explains that technology should be thoroughly addressed in teaching history as it is an essential part of history.

In addition, technology plays a crucial role in the development of human civilization, and teaching history is about that. For instance, the article by Ashby (2017) shows that technology has given people systems of writing, agricultural practices, cotton weaving, mining techniques, and more. This article is related to teaching the history of technology as it demonstrates how technology progressed in former times and the significance of technology for the modern world.

Overall, it is evident that people understand the role of technology in civilization development, and teaching the history of technology is a significant part of teaching history at large. History itself could not be taught appropriately without technology as it is strongly correlated with the teaching processes. Technology is actively applied in today’s learning through technological advancements, such as writing systems. Therefore, it would not be possible to teach history without teaching the history of technology as it is a critical part of human progress.
